Table Lamps
Scandinavian table lamps
Of all the lights in a home, a table lamp is the one you sit closest to. It stands at arm’s length on a bedside table, a desk or a sideboard, and it sets the tone at the end of the day. Ferm Living’s table lamps are made in solid brass, ceramic and powder-coated iron, with shades that soften the light rather than point it. Some arrive complete. Others are lamp bases, sold on their own and paired with a shade you choose.
Most table lamps are bought for one spot and stay there for years. That is why the details matter more here than almost anywhere else in lighting. The height of the shade, the weight of the base, and whether the light falls on the table or across the room all decide how a lamp works in daily use.
Ferm Living’s table lamps follow the same logic as the rest of the range. Solid brass, ceramic and powder-coated iron, shaped simply and finished to show the material. It is a Scandinavian approach to the table lamp, where the object has to earn its place on the table in daylight as well as after dark.
Bedside lamps
A bedside lamp needs to do two things well. It should give enough light to read by, and it should not wake anyone else. A shade that diffuses the light rather than directing it does both, and some of the lamps here have shades in polymer or fiberglass that spread a soft glow instead of a hard beam.
If the bedside table is too small for a lamp, a light mounted on the wall above the bed frees the surface entirely. See all wall lamps and sconces.
Lamps for a desk
On a desk, the light has to land on the work surface rather than in your eyes. Some of the lamps here are designed with that in mind, and several of them has a dimmable function.
Lamp bases and shades
Some of the table lamps are sold as bases without a shade, meant to be paired with one chosen separately. One of them is a ceramic base in several colors. The base can stay while the shade changes, which is a simple way to change a room without replacing the lamp.
Shades sold on their own are in the same collection, so base and shade can be chosen side by side. The same idea runs through Collect Lighting, where fittings and shades are combined freely.
Sockets and bulbs
Socket type and maximum wattage differ from lamp to lamp and are listed on each product page. Bulbs are sold separately, except on lamps with an integrated LED, where the light source is built in and cannot be replaced.
Help choosing
Before choosing a table lamp, it helps to look at where it will stand. Measure the height of the surface, check where the outlet is, and decide whether the lamp is for reading, for working or for a softer light in the evening. If there is no outlet within reach, one of the rechargeable portable lamps may suit the spot better. For light at the height of a reading chair, look at the Scandinavian floor lamps, or see the full range of Scandinavian lighting.
