A key pillar of our mission is to prioritise partnerships with suppliers who champion social responsibility, supported by initiatives and third-party certifications that reflect our shared commitment to human rights and fair working conditions. Explore how our experienced partners expertly transform resilient, premium fibres into exquisitely handcrafted rugs, resulting in timeless masterpieces of enduring quality.

Located in Bhadohi, in northwest India—affectionately called ‘Carpet City’—this area is a hub for artisanal rug craftsmanship. Renowned for its rich history of weaving tradition, this region has cultivated and perfected its skills over countless generations. Over 90% of ferm LIVING rugs are crafted in this pivotal location, making it one of our most vital collaborators in realising our collections.

“Each of our rugs is meticulously handcrafted using premium, highly durable fibres. We work closely with our partners, pushing the boundaries of traditional production techniques in order to create truly exceptional pieces.”

Each production stage is carefully executed by hand, ensuring that every rug emerges as a unique embodiment of ferm LIVING’s vision of long-lasting design, combined with a sustainable mindset regarding material and craftsmanship. Each of our rugs is fashioned from natural materials such as wool, jute, or recycled PET yarn, creating pieces that align with and strengthen our commitment to responsible production. Boasting a wide range of different looms and machinery, our dedicated manufacturing partners are exceptionally equipped to execute the diverse range of manufacturing methods that define our collections.

Within their facilities, rugs are crafted using a selection of refined techniques, including Flat-Weaving, Hand-Tufting and Hand-Knotting. Each method is carefully chosen to complement specific materials, imparting distinctive textures and finishes that elevate the artistry and quality of our rugs.

Flat-Weaving

The majority of our collection, approximately 52%, is crafted using the flat- weaving technique. Carried out on a horizontal loom, this complex process involves interlacing two threads: the vertical strands, the warp, and the horizontal threads, referred to as the weft. Our skilled partners meticulously prepare each fibre on traditional hand-powered looms and then weave the weft back and forth in a rhythmic motion to create these exceptional pieces.

This technique provides notable advantages, yielding rugs with a denser weave and tightly packed fibres, which enhances their durability. Additionally, it allows for a vast array of intricate designs and vibrant colours, all while requiring exceptional skill and craftsmanship—qualities that make it the preferred method for the majority of our pieces.

Hand-Tufting

Approximately 40% of our rugs are hand-tufted, a contemporary technique that blends the time-honoured art of weaving with modern technology. Each piece is crafted using a tufting gun, a precision instrument that meticulously injects yarn through a fabric backing. The yarn is then pushed and pulled through the backing, forming a richly textured pattern on the surface. This results in a beautifully intricate design that highlights the versatility and precision of this technique.

Following the hand-tufting process, the fibres are either thoroughly trimmed or enhanced through machine finishing, depending on the desired outcome. The fabric choice plays a crucial role in determining the final effect. We primarily use cotton and wool as the main materials in our production process.

Hand-Knotting

Hand-knotting, a revered and time-honoured technique, is being used to produce some of our most premium rug designs. Originating in 16th-century India, this sophisticated craft involves thoroughly tying each knot on a vertical loom, resulting in unparalleled quality and craftsmanship.

The process begins with our partners creating a full-scale design on graph paper. Once drafted, the design is placed on the loom, setting the process in motion. Working from the ground up, the vertical warp threads are carefully tied onto the loom, after which horizontal rows of weft threads are added to secure the warp, establishing the rug’s base.

After the entire rug has been knotted, it is removed from the loom. Using scissors, the piece is trimmed, gradually revealing the elaborate details as the pile is shortened and evened out. The cutting of the ends imparts a unique, tactile quality to the rug, enhancing its beauty with a subtly irregular texture.

Once woven, the finished rugs are carefully packed and shipped from our manufacturer to their final destination. There, they will help you craft a space where you can feel comfortably you.
